Acreage is a great idea for retirement and fun if you like to grow fruits and vegetables. Some fruits are easy to handle, others attract birds and animals. Another issue is when you have a good harvest, it is not easy to consume all unless you try to give away. My friend has a melon farm and after a few years, no one wants to have melon anymore...
Having a big house requires a lot of maintenance. Roof, windows and exterior need regular repairs and painting. It is very hard to get tradies to come if you are too far away and the job is too small.
Actually some new residential developments are for downsizers, amenities include organic garden and outdoor space.

Agree, one's life style is the most important factor when making decision. Somehow my in laws in Australia, which are many, all like growing vege, fruits and are very handy men. Some bought farmland for investment many years ago. So they decided to buy a new acreage home after 80s. Neighbour of another in laws who us also a good friend of her is Chinese in 70s. She and other Chinese friends of 70s always go around Australia in caravan for months.
Just choose a way of life which one enjoys and can afford financially , physically and mentally.

Interests rate rises bring much more passive income plus rental rise brings benefits to some retirees.
2023-04-05 09:17:35 - #667 [JCR33], 23-04-05 06:51Passive income from rent can be a good source of income. However, tax on this can be high, especially when you sell the property, the capital gain tax.
Owners occupied properties are better if you hold it long enough. - #666 [JCR33], 23-04-05 05:32#665
Depending on your lifestyle and if you need to travel to CBDs, Windsor and Richmond can be nice to live in.
For people planning to retire, usually they go for downsizing. Trying to look after large property or garden can be very demanding. After all we use our kitchen, bedroom, sitting room the most, so I would go for apartment for easy maintenance. - #665 [ich], 23-04-04 18:45#662

珀斯 - #662 [JCR33], 23-04-04 04:41My friend has an 5 acres near Wilbourforce , the backyard has 2 acres of lawn and front garden has hundreds of trees and plants. Beautiful setting especially sunset by the Hawkesbury River.
One day of landscape work by one guy is $600. A lot of work other than lawn. Plumbing, paving, fertilising, weeding, pest control, flooding, drought.... never ending.
Current value is about A$4-5m, 30mins drive from Tallawong Metro station and 90 min drive from Sydney CBD if no traffic jam.

no need to mow at regular interval, use ride on mower when needed.
There is a 25x7M workshop with separate carport as well.
If I were younger I might seriously consider this property.

2023-04-03 16:24:41 - #653 [JCR33], 23-04-03 13:13Australia faces years of extreme rental and housing pain as the nation confronts a shortage of 106,000 dwellings by 2027 due to high-interest rates, soaring immigration and community opposition to new homes.
While new figures show dwelling values climbed 0.6 per cent in March after almost a year of falls, a report by the National Housing Finance and Investment Corporation (NHFIC) forecasts Brisbane alone will be short 12,300 dwellings within five years while Sydney will be short more than 10,000.
