i consider the cost to rebuild cartridge at Soundsmith is reasonable. recommended.

But if one wish to restore the original sound, I doubt Soundsmith is exactly doing that.

For original sound, go for the manufacturer rebuild.

my omega rebuild involve a lot of work, as Peter said(the owner), so it cost significantly more in the end.

the result is very good, I feel more power and punch coming from my rebuilt Omega, before the rebuild it was very balanced but definitely more subtle than now. I am not sure if this is just my imagination......

The bottom line, it may not be an upgrade in every case but definitely not a downgrade. The result is very promising especially on DL103 series. All my 103 sounds way better after their boron/Contact line treatment. You will be amazed to see how good the 103 could be.

I think ZYX are easier to drive than the Denon.

ZYX should have H/L version, output 0.24 and 0.48mv respectively. Not difficult to push both with a normal phono stage amp.

My ZYX are great on unipivot, I have excellent result on my Schroder Model 2, Roksan Nima, super agile and dynamic and airy

ZYX also works great on my ekos/akito 2b/Origin Live Conqueror. but I have to add some weight at headshell with my ZYX on this arms to increase the mass of ZYX cartridges to balance the arm for proper adjustment.

On the other hand, 103 maybe be more suitable on arms like ekos instead of unipivot arms, they are still playable on my Model 2 or Nima, but not as good performance compare to arms like ekos.

I think this is probably due to compliance problem

Since you two have had used both ZYX and Denon 103, I would appreciate if you could cast some more light on the tonearm(s) that you use to pair with ZYX and/or Denon.

I have these two MC cartridges for many years already, without installing them to work because I had a very disappointing experience before with MC head. Now I have two DUAL turntables (they work well with MM heads) and these two MC heads. Just wonder if I could install ZYX to try on DUAL if it has lesser mass, or close to MM? In that case, whether or not my Denon step-up transformer could work happily with ZYX? I know the impedance data could be found in the internet.

My previous experience was Denon 103 on SME3009 (forgot which mark).

I have a few 103/103pro/103r and Soundsmith upgraded 103 and 103r(boron cantilever/ruby cantilever, line contact diamond), I have modified my 103 with aluminium body/wooden body/open body with wood back plate/stone(孔雀石). I found the 103 character is mid oriented and great for vocal, pop and good for rock(compared to ZYX)

My observation on my ZYX (Airy one and two) is that they emphasis on details and airy feel, speed and dynamic, however, mid range and bass is good but not impressive. Therefore they tend to be better on classical and jazz trio in my system (to my taste) The higher grade Omega is much more balanced and great for High/mid/low. It is great for all kind of music, but the vocal is still a bit less solid than the modified103.

It is just like comparing an orange with an apple, the ZYX is a mid mass MC cartridge, while the DL-103R is a high mass cartridge, they will need different kind of tonearm to match with for optimal performance........

They sound very different in all aspect, but if someone want to have higher resolution and details with mellow sounding, ZYX would be the choice, if someone prefer more punchy bass and care less for the overall details, Denon is still an enjoyable cartridge.......

記得 ZYX RS-30 Mk 2 同 Denon DL103R 差不多價格，有冇人比較過兩者分別？
