- #22 [T], 04-05-28 01:08You can probably get a pair of Tannoy Lancaster with 15" Gold for around 15k if you are lucky.
But the most sought-after Tannoys are those in triangular shape i.e. corner cabnet. - #23 [william], 04-05-28 01:11Oh... ok... I will try to arrange the time with mr ho again.....

Finnally change to Dyna. - #30 [j33], 04-06-10 23:38大家好,
CHEVIOT這對本人聽很多年了,不知各同好對它的評價如何呢?有沒有可令它發揮得好的意見呢? - #31 [mice], 04-06-11 01:02I am more crazy ! Use a pair of "Balmoral" 12'Gold. Use Luxman CL-35 + Dynakit 70 to drive it now. I think Tannoy is best for vocal, violin. I have been doing intensive test on matching amp.
Tried these:
Pre:
Luxman c-02, sonic frontier SFL-1, Line-1, SunAudio SVC-200, Luxman CL-40, CL-35MKiii(now using...)
Power:
SunAudio 300B, Dynaco 35 (EL84), Dynaco 70 (EL34), Accuphase P300.....
for my personal 2cents of comments, it is very diffcult to find a good Pre-amp... I rank the control amplifer must be the heart of my hold gear....
For movie, I have 2 pair of Tannoy System 10 (front and surround).....I think I already poisoned by tannoy
Enjoy ! - #32 [mice], 04-06-11 01:04you can visit here to see the speaker..
(don't know how to attach photo....)
http://photos.yahoo.com.hk/qmice - #33 [JL], 04-06-11 07:57I used to be an LS3/5A fan. I have placed the shoe-box speakers in my stuyd room since I acquired a pair of 12 Golds.
Like Mice, I have been trying to find amps that can cope better with the Golds. Actually, Tannoy speakers are very user friendly. As they are quite sensitive, most of which are having 90+ db, I think most amps in the world can drive them well. Anyhow, I find that modern solid state amps are less compatible with Tannoy vintage speakers.
At the moment, I have tried some vintage gear, viz preamps Lafayette KT600A, Luxman CL35 MkIII, Fisher 400C, HH Scott 122 & Marantz 7 and amps Marantz 8B, Eico HF60, HF20, Quicksilver Minimite and Heathkit AA201. They are all doing well with the Golds. Anyhow, I find the best combos are Luxman CL35 Mk III + Eico HF60 and Marantz 7 + 8B.
I must reiterate that I am no expert at all and my experience is very limited.
Just my two cents
John - #34 [lo5boy], 04-06-11 08:45I have a pair of tannoy greenwich (not greenwich 2) that is the little brother of the prestige series. I am happy with the built and musicality of it for years.
- #35 [mice], 04-06-11 09:58hi John,
What is EICO HF60 ?what tubes it use ? you seems doing lots of research for our tannoy gold !
I also have a query about CL35....
I know the tube alignment is:
X7 X7 X7 X7 U7 X7 X7
and if I want to change one pair of X7, which pair should I try ? the right most or the left most ? Any idea ?
Thankss.... - #36 [mice], 04-06-11 10:18one more question: what CDP are you using ? John ?
- #37 [JL], 04-06-11 19:00Hi Mice
It is always my pleasure to speak with guys in the same language and those who are drinking the same kind of cup of tea.
I must reiterate that I am no expert. I am only an enthusiast. Vintage Tannoy speakers are very popular in the UK and USA. You can see thousands of threads and tens of websites on line.
I am using two CD players, a vintage Marantz CD10 and a vintage Sony X3000. I am using them as transports whilst using an Ultralink II and an MSB DAC.
Eico is an American vintage brand. HF60 is the top of the line product of this brand. It is a mono block using two EL34s, 1 GZ34, 1 EF86 and 1 6SN7. Of course, I have two HF60s so as to produce stero sounds. It is one of the best power amps I have ever auditioned.
Yes, the tubes. Looking at the back of the CL35, there are seven tubes -- from left to right: 2 12AX7s, 1 12AU7, 4 12AX7s. I don't have the schematics. However, the previous owner told me that the left two should be for phono. So, if you do not play with vinyl, you do not have to use the best tubes for these two. If you want to change one pair of 12AX7s only, I suggest you judge it yourself. First you try the middle pair and then right pair and see which you consider better.
At the moment, I use 6 Mullard 10M 7025s and 1 Telefunken ECC802S. I have tried a pair of ECC803Ss in the left, middle and right positions. However, I still prefer using the mullard exotic tubes. Of course, this is only personal taste.
Just my two cents
John
PS : Kindly note that my left/right alignment decribed above is just the opposite of yours. - #38 [mice], 04-06-11 21:37wow...full of experience..~~
Thank you soo much..
I am so disappointed to sold my transport & DAC today. (Philips LHH-1000...) am still looking for a good CDP...Marantz CD11 MKii will be my next target..another in mind is Philips 202.
Sorry for all other members, for this private conversion... hey, this is my Tannoy....
I do use 4x Telefunken ax7 on the right, 1x au7 on Ralvo and 2 x ax7 Miniwatt Dario, the shop told me this pair is from 1950s..(not sure he tell the truth or not..) anyway...
I do admire you have a really good setup. Really hope I can have a chance to visit u !! - #39 [JL], 04-06-11 22:51Actually I look like a fool to many people. The price of the tubes I am using in fact far exceeds that of the preamp.
CDP is a very important part. I have used modern CDP before but subsequently gone back to vintage. From my own limited experience, old CDPs appear to be more compatible with vintage amps and speakers.
I have to mention another beauty of Tannoy vintage speakers. I find that even small amps with limited power can drive them well and the bass is still acceptable. For example, no matter I drive the 12" Golds with a pair of Eico HF20 (20W per channel) or a Heathkit AA201 (6W per channel), the bass produced by my speakers satisfies me. According to the specs, the sensitity of th 12" Golds is 93.4 db, which is not difficult to drive. - #40 [mung], 04-06-12 10:17Good morning John !
Hi mice !
John, you found another Luxman CL35 MkIII user here. Longing to here this legendary pre-amp.
