- #410 [chinaimamn], 09-10-26 04:24What made Sinead O'Connor famous off course was her second album "I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got". I was in Spain when it came out and I thought what a wonderful record and miles better than her first one.
There were some songs really close to my heart and I send a copy of the CD to my ex-wife as well. I never heard from her though. - #409 [chinaimamn], 09-10-26 04:21There are more brilliant Irish bands indeed.....
Sinead O'Connor caught my attention was purely due to two names in her debut album: Rob Dean and Enya.
I was a big fan of Japan since their first record. I followed them all the way even went back to Hong Kong to see their performance in the Baptism Hall. Rob Dean was the original lead guitarist.
Enya as you may know her from the very smooth romantic Celtic sound. She was actually part of the Clannad to begin with and I love Clannad. -
- #408 [rickymartin], 09-10-26 03:19講起愛爾蘭,都有唔少出名歌手/樂隊: Sinead O'Connor; boyzone; U2; Secret Garden...
- #407 [chinaimamn], 09-10-26 02:37Talk of Irish musicians and this lady is not a Rock star but I like her a lot.
Mary Black and I guess many are familiar with her so I say no more. I saw her couple of times and got an autograph as well. It's sad but true ;)
I am not sure if anyone knows this one? - #406 [chinaimamn], 09-10-26 02:32At the moment the biggest band from Scotland could be Snow Patrol.
Technically they are Irish Band as the members are from Northern Ireland but studied in Dundee. Formed at the University of Dundee in Dundee, Scotland in 1994, the band is now based in Glasgow. So there you go.
I first noticed them from some Indi labels forum and I bought their first record. I first saw them in 1999 in Norwich University. And again when they supported Granddaddy before they released "Final Straw". When I heard "Run" I said to my wife that they were going to be big. The rest is history. - #405 [chinaimamn], 09-10-26 02:25Camera Obscura is also formed in Glasgow and is closely related to Belle & Sebastian.
Camera Obscura's first album, Biggest Bluest Hi Fi, was released in 2001. The album was produced by Stuart Murdoch from the Belle & Sebastian and was supported by late John Peel. In the summer of 2002 Peel asked the band to do their first Peel session.
Their sound is not actually very Rock. It's a little bit of Pop, Folk and crossover. What I like about them is the clever arrangement of string and brass session. It's spot on as if you have too much you would commit suicide. - #404 [chinaimamn], 09-10-26 02:17Another band from Glasgow: Belle & Sebastian.
They were big among the students in the uni when they came out. Many worship them like God. They were the new "The Smiths" and "Nick Drake". - #403 [chinaimamn], 09-10-26 02:10And Goodbye Mr. Mackenzie were a Scottish 1980s and 1990s rock group formed in Bathgate, near Edinburgh. They are best known as the group of which Shirley Manson – the lead singer of US alternative rock group Garbage – was once a background member.
I wouldn't worry too much if you couldn't find their music as they were "OK" but nothing to shout about. - #402 [rickymartin], 09-10-26 01:42Glasvegas? 我真係大鄉里,未聽過。 得閑去HMV搵搵。
- #401 [chinaimamn], 09-10-26 01:33估唔到蘇格蘭出咁多好 Rock Band,有時間一定要去愛丁堡音樂節,聽翻幾日。

It could be closer than you think. Just pop in the HMV store and look for Glasvegas ^_^ - #400 [rickymartin], 09-10-26 01:20估唔到蘇格蘭出咁多好 Rock Band,有時間一定要去愛丁堡音樂節,聽翻幾日。

WE have to put it in a different perspective. They aren't popular doesn't mean they lack quality. There are many factors to become a chart spinning band. To begin with, did they want it?
Their debut album as I quoted as below:
"When local Hi-Fi manufacturer Linn Electronics heard their music, through friend and recording engineer Calum Malcolm, the company offered the band money to record a track that would showcase the sonic range of the company's high-end audio equipment. Linn was so pleased with the result, they formed their own record label in order to release The Blue Nile's debut, A Walk Across the Rooftops, in 1983.Walk Across The Rooftops. Buchanan later commented that during that time Linn was not really a record company, and The Blue Nile was not really a band. Although it received positive reviews, it sold modestly."
All three members are highly regarded by many music reviewers in the UK. If you look at the numbers of records they make in 25 years,4 in total, then you realise their attitude to fame.
Chi - #398 [rickymartin], 09-10-26 01:07最近有聽 Mazzy Star, 都唔錯。
- #397 [db4zagato], 09-10-26 01:03Thanks to bring up R.E.M. These LPs are over 20 years!
- #396 [chinaimamn], 09-10-26 00:58Sorry Vash, Hue and Cry are not really in my list. What do you like about them?
- #395 [rickymartin], 09-10-26 00:57英國有唔少好質素但係唔出名Rock Band。香港人唔識聽唔奇怪,最奇怪連英國當地都唔流行,真係好可惜。
- #394 [Vash], 09-10-26 00:51How about Hue and Cry ? They are one of my favorite when they were under CIRCA era, now they belongs to LINN label.

If you like Blue Nile I presume you like some free-jazz and experimental folk music. In that case you may like Cat Power.
Cat Power - The Greatest on Jools Holland - #392 [chinaimamn], 09-10-26 00:36You have "Hats" already so no need to mention. I would recommend "Peace at Last". The acoustic guitar and the choir arrangement on "Happiness" are so wonderful that your spirit would have lifted up a little bit.
Sadly they didn't have it on vinyl so I only have the CD :( - 下一頁 (3 of 23)

The Cranberries, remember them? I think Faye Wong covered their "Dreams" and it was featured in the movie "Chungking Express". It happens that this is the only Hong Kong Chinese movie my wife likes a lot though she couldn't understand a single word. BTW she's English.
