may I ask what is the tube equipment above the Solid-Steel rack?
A diy pre-amp?
thank you! -
- #64 [jaxx], 09-11-29 13:05spyder hing
it is a diy preamp. designed by a high hand and made in US. It's using some 50 years old parts. It is very musical, elegant and well balance. It look simple but extremely well tuning. It match with a 30 years old Quad 303 power amp. Renew, replacing Wimer capacitor and 30 parts, then re-tuning by high hand master. - #65 [jaxx], 09-11-30 11:29diy pre amp
- #66 [spyder], 09-11-30 15:59thanks jaxx hing,
it is interesting that a tube pre-map match with a 70's solid state amp. is there any special reason?
how about if connecting to a tube pwr amp? - #67 [jaxx], 09-12-01 12:14spyder hing
of course it can match with tube power amp. I try before but resonable price and outstanding sound tube power amp deliver less than 10W output. It is not enough for my existing speaker. So, I bought an old Quad cost less than $2K with another thousands for modification. The sound quality is extremely good. This 30 years old power amp had been awarded for industrial achievement at that time. Original sound good already! The circuit is very good and simple. Besides, there are a lot of information of modification from the internet. We tune it up and produce the original character of 70'. The sound now is 淡定得來又有節奏。 It is not only for typical 蔡琴, it can be for Jazz, pop and symphony. The preamp can provide a very dynamic sound stage, pin point detail, crystally 3D and adorable musical. So, I am very happy about them! The most important, they are not expensive.
Sorry for the tempting description! - #68 [spyder], 09-12-02 10:29jaxx hingm
why sorry. It is good to share with you. Thanks a lot.
I also interested on Quad. What do you think about 306 and 405?
I know 303 is good too but it may need to maintence/repair if I find it from 2nd market. I don't know electronic. - #69 [jaxx], 09-12-02 13:51spyder hing
Only the 303 is good enough, the shoe box case design is unique and extremely stable. The circuit is simple and direct. If you can find in the 2nd hand market, I can ask my friend to do something for you! It sing better than the 306, 405 or 909 a lot! - #70 [george1977], 09-12-02 13:58Spyder
Please go to visit QUAD amp thread, those solid-state power amps IMHO are not that inferior to their elder brothers sonically.
George1977 - #71 [spyder], 09-12-02 17:27jaxx hing,
thanks in advance. :p
306 is pwr amp. is it better to match with 34 or 44? or just can match any other pre-amp?
george1997 hing,
yes, 80's British amp is my favor. After got a Cyrus 2, I really want to taste Quad. - #72 [jaxx], 09-12-03 10:31George hing
I am sure you know better than me for the Quad. If original, the new model should be better or more matching the market trend than the old one; otherwise, nobody buy the new one. Unless, they change the designer and have problem of the ear. Of course, it is very subjective for the taste change.
You also agree that most of the products from Quad are very good indeed. To me, I would like to pick some gear with 70' taste. One of the decade of music bloom. They can be modified and easy to find parts for service and improve. Even modification, I will try to keep some curcial original parts. So, my friend and I have spare sets of 303 for future use. They are not expensive and they have a great potential to upgrade and produce an unbelievable sonic performance.

I think 405 is more well known than 306 in the market. So, 34 should be more match to 405. My friend has a 33 pre-amp. It is so beautiful inside. You cannot imagine how many working hours to assemble it. We don't have time to check the sonic performance yet since we keep upgrading the 303. I will let you know later. - #73 [george1977], 09-12-03 10:49Morning jaxx ching
We are all lovers of QUAD, just like different period of amplifiers, whether solid-state or tube. 303 almost stepped into my home but I do concern the problem of maintenance and parts availability, so I finally give up.
Agreed with you that 405 and 303 in 1970s were born in the era of music bloom in all genres (whether classical, jazz and rock), that's why I choose QUAD amp irrelevant to price, but just sonic consideration and its reliability.
303 (or its professional model 50E) was once used by BBC (UK), Netherland Radio, RTHK, DECCA, PHILIPS and PINK FLOYD to monitor the resultant sound at their studios.
Anyway you genuinely have taste to pick the tonally neutral gear (Cyrus and QUAD)although the sonic judgement itself is subjective.
Enjoy listening!

Thanks for your report! You are very informative. I am sure you can share a lot of knowledge to all the music lovers. - #76 [jaxx], 09-12-03 11:36One more thing to share, I try to use a custome made transformer to boot my power supply of my home from 214V to 227V. All my UK made gears like a wake up. There is a big improvement in dynamic and details. So, I think all the UK made gears are based on their voltage supply 230V to design.
