- #2 [doctorjohn], 06-11-13 18:57Hello!
The dissonance in the slow movement almost always give me the creeps! Definitely a struggle between heaven and earth, from a terminally ill man.
The Schuricht VPO version is cheap and great. May be hard to find. - #3 [doctorjohn], 06-11-13 19:00Nothing today yet.
Last night:
Not the top rank, but not bad. -
- #4 [chankaiming], 06-11-13 19:08May be I will listen to his symphony No 8 tonight. The version I have was by Karajan, another version I have was Nowak 1887 version conducted by Tintner on Naxos.
Karajan stress on beauty of sound while Tintner was more spiritual, however he was let down by the inferior version he choose to play. - #5 [chankaiming], 06-11-13 19:38Doctor John:
The version I have for Mahler Symphony No.1 was by Kubelik, good lyrical performance but poor recording.
I am still seeking for a Mahler Symphony No.1 in modern recording! How is Javi? - #6 [lym], 06-11-13 19:52禾想聽呢隻, 然後上床膠膠豬...!
- #7 [chankaiming], 06-11-13 20:17Lym:
Great music. Karajan was specialized in these miniatures which never failed to delight.
The version I have was by Marriner, also enjoyable. - #8 [kenkc2005hk], 06-11-13 22:03i'm novice in classical music. mentioned by chankaiming, i'm now listening to the adagio of this.
- #9 [chankaiming], 06-11-13 22:27Although I have collect all the symphonies by Bruckner, I cannot say I am too famailiar with Bruckner. I think Doctor John is the real expert in Bruckner.
- #10 [kenkc2005hk], 06-11-13 22:45when late, i like to listen to some tracks of the nocturnes.
- #11 [ocean], 06-11-13 23:31This is the last round music for tonight.
- #12 [chankaiming], 06-11-14 09:48Last night, I revisit Bruckner Symphony No. 8. These soul shaking music once again left me speechless, they are like the great cathedral of europe, I cannot stop amzing at its greatness.
I found these music especially suitable for Vienna Philharmonic, the long and grand slow movement that never end is a excellent vehicle to show off their famous gorgous strings. No wonder Karajan choose to recording with Vienna instead of his own Berlin Philharmonic.
However, these music are repectable but not lovely, my wife protest to me that it is too noisy, may be these music is really too difficult for her, hope that one day she will me mature enough to appreciate its greatness. Eventually, I change to Schubert string Quintet in C. - #13 [chankaiming], 06-11-14 10:00Schubert's string Quintet is a perfect encore after the music of Bruckner, and also a perfect music before sleep. The second movement of string Quintet in C is justly famous for its beauty and transquility, Rubinstein specially request this piece of music to be his funeral music, and most important of all, my pregnant wife and the baby inside would not protest again.
Hollywood string quartet's recording was in excellent mono, but their playing quickly let you forget the shortcoming in engineering. - #14 [邊個邊個], 06-11-14 10:17冇晚期vpo個隻咁凝重深刻,朱里尼早期d呢個version著重音樂的流動性,聲部平衡木管非常美麗,慢板結尾樂章好純淨聖潔。

Zimerman was my favorite pianist. In Debussy, his approach was totally different from those from older generation. While Gieseking's Debussy was dreamy, atmospheric and hammerless, Zimerman's playing was more modern, clean and dynamic. But despite the difference, both were regarded as the greatest Debussy player of their time. - #16 [邊個邊個], 06-11-14 10:21聽呢類音樂好講自己個mood,點有可能拿來日日聽...
- #17 [doctorjohn], 06-11-14 11:29The greatest Mahler bargain ever (~200 for full set, chepest place is Central Pro Sound), not one loser among them. Recording is German Radio, garanteed excellence.
- #18 [chankaiming], 06-11-14 13:29Listening now
Schumann: Kinderszenen/Carnaval/Faschingsschwank aus Wien
Piano: Daniel Barenboim
Light and cheerful music, really cheer me up after the boring morning session. - #19 [minpin], 06-11-14 13:32zimerman is my favourite too. i remember his concert showed that everything was prepared in the most thoughtful manner, yet the playing was full of surprises and the music utterly convincing. i'm not sure if you agree, but i think he has become bolder in his phrasing since the debussy recordings.
the other artiste i can think of with a similar approach is perahia, but there were more similarities between zimerman and perahia in the past than they are now.
as to the bruckner recordings, why wouldn't anybody mention Celibidache's? - #20 [chankaiming], 06-11-14 15:59Perahia and Zimerman are two piano giant of our generation, but they cannot be more different.
Perahia play in a natural, spontaeous fashion, his tempo will neither be too fast or too slow, he let the music speak for itself, he let music flow, as a result his best moment are in baroque, classical or early romantic piano works like Bach, Scaletti, Mozart or Beethoven.
Zimerman play in romatic style, his tempo are usually slow but his tempo change deliberately, his playing is inspired, thoughful most of the time yet he may be exciting when music call for it. He excel in romantic to late romantic piano works like Chopin, Ravel, Debussy.
Perahia can be regarded as Rubinstein of our generation while Zimerman can be reagrded as Richter of our generation. - 下一頁 (1 of 431)

The beautiful slow movement is really moving under the baton og Burno Walter. Thanks Doctor John for reminding me to listen to this great work again.
