A little update with regards to the STD deck and Rega RB300 tonearm as I have made some changes.
I remember the time I had the Rega RB250 and many suggested the counterweight is the weakest point. It was a black steel.
The Rega RB300 I have now is the latest version with a stainless steel counterweight. The early RB300 comes with a Tungsten counterweight which is better.
Both the steel and stainless steel counterweights are not the best for its sonic performance and there are plenty after-market replacements people adapt.
I still have some materials I used to DIY for the RB250 and hopefully it may improve.

STD+Rega RB300 in action.
The title of this thread is HK$5000 for a turntable and mine are all under this budget. I bought the STD in a boot sale and I think it was £20. The Rega RB300 bought for £50 about 10 years ago as a project. It needs paint respray but luckily the wires are ok. I did think about rewiring but never quite ready.
As compared to the Fons+SAEC 308 arm the STD+Rega RB300 is quite ok. It doesn't have the sweet mid like the Fons+SAEC. That said it has decent low. The sound-stage and imagery are close but due to my hearing so I wouldn't be able to tell in any difference.
I wonder if it is anything to do with the wooden plinth from the Fons and plastic from the STD.
I may make some DIY counter weight to replace the original steel one from Rega. There are lots of after-market replacement counter weight and I guess there must be a reason for improvement.

Well we have to accept 150 mainlanders everyday. That’s why we are living smaller and smaller every year.
Wealthier but poorer in living space. - #224 [fotheringay], 19-11-22 05:30Back to DIY and waxing was completed. I have some hybrid pin centering sleeves and I imagine it could give more rigidity and vibration reduction.
More importantly I feel it looks better on the wood base than just the locking blots.

Yes, it is quite handy to have extra space. My humble home...........I wish!!!
Unlike US, Canada or Australia houses in the UK are generally quite small unless you are quite well off.
I have adequate space with one garage(turned into my music den) and two big sheds to store my tools.
Nothing extravagant.

- #220 [BenYC], 19-11-20 23:14Great wood work. Perfect alignment. And RB300 is a great arm.
- #219 [fotheringay], 19-11-20 22:57Now I need to clean the lens and check if the arm need to refill oil or the arm lift.
There is also the waxing for the wood base to keep it weather proof.
The task is now which cart to play with ?
2019-11-20 22:58:09 - #218 [fotheringay], 19-11-20 22:50Making the hole for the arm tower is by a wood centre hole drill and it is simple and straight forward.
Also making holes for the locking blot which will lock the wood base firming with the sub-chassis.
I copy the mounting plate from Vinylengine and have been quite familair with the process.

I have an old Rega RB300 tonearm which not been used since I sold all my Linn LP12. I think it's tome to resurrect it and put it in action.

- #215 [addyg], 19-11-18 20:31#213
- 下一頁 (1 of 12)
