- #2 [johnnykmtang], 25-02-08 06:41I brought a pair of 300B SE mono power amp to my friend's home this morning. He said he isn't satisfy the bass of his system. He is using the Luxman M800A Class A power amp with a pair of nice floor standing speakers from Italy. First he played few songs with his M800A. I found that the sound was very decent, detailed and smooth. I was rather impressed with it.
Then, I put my 300B's on the stage and played the same songs again. My friend was so surprised the 300B with less than 8 watts could have a full body, sweety and clearity. Of course, the bass is a bit more powerful. My friend has the SunValley 300B SE amp too. He said why mine is so different from his. I said it is because my 300B SE has the transistor circuits which enhance the performance of it.
Believe it or not.... an 8 watt amp can match with an 60 watts class A solid-state.

Thanks for posting
I do not use tube amps and not as experienced as many here
But from what I have read, heard and learnt, one would not need huge watts to drive speakers
Mostly than not few watts are more than enough to output substantial amount of dB with efficient speakers
With the design of electronics, quality of materials used, speaker placements etc, yea good sound (tonal balance, nuances, soundstage and depth etc) could be obtained
From memory there is an esoteric Japanese brand that only makes tube amp for a watt or 2?
Cheers -
- #4 [johnnykmtang], 25-02-08 09:14Hi Michael Wittmann,
Thank you for your post. From my experience, most of the good sounding tube amps are having output power of 1.5~30 watts. With such low power, it would require speakers of >89dB sensitivity for sufficient sound pressure level (SPL). As you mentioned, it is very true that with the design of electronics, quality of materials used, speaker placements etc, yea good sound (tonal balance, nuances, soundstage and depth etc) could be obtained.
However, I don't know if Esoteric Japan makes low power tube amps. I just found the Esoteric A-100 Stereo Power Amplifier with 45 watts output was introduced in 2009. Maybe someone may tell us other tube amps were made by Esoteric.
Cheers,
Johnny - #5 [johnnykmtang], 25-02-08 09:18Inside view of Esoteric A100 - KT88 push pull amplifier
The design : quote "The A-100 goes the extra mile by introducing cathode followers ahead of and following the phase splitter. The input stage us- es a 12AT7 dual triode for voltage amplification and as a cathode follower. A single 12AU7 (per channel) is configured as a classic paraphase phase splitter. Although not as popular these days as a split load or a long-tailed pair, the paraphase was chosen on the basis of its sonic merits in this application; the overall sound of the A-100 was simply more natural with this topology. The phase-splitter stage is followed by another 12AU7 configured as a cathode follower. Recall that the output impedance of a cathode follower is low and that it makes for an ideal driver stage. Interestingly enough, the last three stages are DC-coupled—that is, there are no capacitors in the signal path between the phase splitter, cathode follower, and the output stage." - #6 [MichaelWittmann], 25-02-08 09:21Sorry I might not have made myself clear
I was not meant to refer to the brand Esoteric, but rather a 'high end' Japanese brand
I have found it

If speaker has high efficiency rate which means the power requirement of amplifier would be lower. For example, the efficiency rate of Altec A5 is around 103db/1W/M. If you are feeding 1 watt of power into Altec A5, than you will receive 103db at 1 meter and 97db at 2 meter.
If you make it stereo and feeding 2 watts for a pair of Altec A5 (1 watt per channel and 2 watts in total for stereo), you will receive 106db at 1 meter and 100db at 2 meters. Assume you are sitting at 2 meters away from the speaker, so what is the concept of 100db? This level of noise is equivalent to the sound of setting at the first row of rock concert....! If you are using high efficiency speaker, which make no big different on 8 watts amplifier or 100 watts amplifier on your speaker SPL output, since you are just using 2 watts output on your amplifier. However, the quality of "tone" (2 watts of tone quality of your amplifier) would make a big difference to your ears.
Best regards
Alan

Here is one schematic that I found which should be self-explanatory.
However, I don't like this phase splitter circuit.

You are absolutely right regarding the requirement of the output power of the amplifier and the speaker sensitivity. Excellent information.
The 45 tube single-ended amplifier with only 1.5 watts output is the most favorite good sounding amp among my friends. Of course, it requires speakers with 93~100dB sensitivity.
Johnny - #10 [johnnykmtang], 25-02-08 09:57About 10 years ago, I brought my DIY 45 tube SE amp to my friend's place for demo. He had the B&W 801 speaker with sensitivity of 87dB. Of course, the 45 amp wasn't able to match my friend's Marantz 9 mono power amp, my 45 did very well that amazed those joined the party.

- #12 [CodyChan], 25-02-08 10:55Beside how to make harmonious sound, I'm also would like to know how to record pristine sound.
I tried Samsung S24 and iPhone 16 however both cannot be recorded the sound likely real saturation.
Other forum member suggest Zoom H1n, is it good?
Or is there anyone can share the equipment that good for recording Audio sound? - #13 [alytsang], 25-02-08 11:21Good sound and being able to sit still and enjoy it are two different things
- #14 [johnnykmtang], 25-02-09 09:04I would say Music Recording requires years of training and study in college or university. I have friends who are in the business but I don't have a clue what they are doing and what kind of equipment they are having.

"Good sound and being able to sit still and enjoy it are two different things"
"I would say Music Recording requires years of training and study".
I totally agree with the above statements, especially if you are a professional sound engineer. The critical knowledge, experience and sensitivity are utterly important.
Nonetheless, there are many with below-amateur standard, me being one of them, would like to try to do some recordings of their listening experience.
One way to share if you can't do home visit is to make a recording of your equipment and environment to show to friends if they are far away from you.
At the moment I am just using a cheap ZOOM H5N Digital Recorder.

Thank you so much sharing your recordings. They sound very nice and beautiful indeed. Love them.
I like the one by "Teddy Robin". I had the LP album when I was young. Now, I just have the CD album. My favorite one is "天外人".....
Most of us keep looking for better audio equipment for music reproduction but lack of knowledge in actual music and recordings. Hoping you would let us know some more. Highly appreciated.

Hi Johnny,
Thanks for the kind words and I just love music, and my audio gears are just the tools for me to play with my beloved music.
I must admit that I have lost my hearing, my right side is completely gone and wearing hearing aid on my left.
Nonetheless, it won't stop me from enjoying my music, in a very different way, not stereo or audiophile quality. The music is the primary.
Recently I acquired a pair of Linn SARA ISOBARICK speakers. I have long been wanting to try the bigger DMS but never got the chance. This pair of SARA came up so I thought why not trying the little sister?
I tried them out in my garage(my man-cave) to run in since they have been in storage for more than 4 years.
They are intended to be used in the main house in the spare home so I don't need to suffer from hypothermic condition in the unheated garage in the Winter!!!
Here are some videos showing the transformation from the garage to the room and using different systems. The recording tool is still the ZOOM H5N.
