The mains voltage from a typical UK home socket is 240V. Sometimes it can even go up to 245V as I have measured my sockets from time to time. Therefore it would be a bit risky to plug in a high wattage equipment, typically a power amp designed for 220V.
The voltage harmonisation was a thing when UK was still a member of the EU. By then a number of EU country e,g. Germany had 220V mains voltage where as UK had 240V. No one country was willing to alter its own mains voltage as it would be very costly and of little investment value. The final solution was for all countries to agree to a common nominal voltage 230V with some tolerance to be factored in when manufacturers designing home appliances. However when it comes to HiFi audio, our ear will tell us accurate voltage is acute to listening experience. In short UK voltage has not changed over the years, still 240V from the mains.
Before I moved to the UK, I sent my 220V tube power amp to the dealer to change the input voltage to 240V (generally for use in the UK and Australia). For the pre-amp, I checked with the manufacturer who said that it was good for 220-240V, so I did not ask my dealer to do the same.
I also had a bad experience with the UK mains voltage to share. I have a Japanese version 100V YAMAHA CA-2000 coupled with a 220V to 100V step-down transformer. It worked fine in Hong Kong. When I set up the same in the UK the first time, all the fuses on the YAMAHA power supply board got blown (fuse glass cracked). It is because the 240V mains voltage went through the step down transformer to become 130V and turned out to be much higher than the amplifier would need. A lesson learned..
So my advice is to get a step down transformer from 240v to 220v for your tube amp.
