Copland's fanfare was composed in 1942 for the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra -- one of 18 fanfares written to promote patriotic response at America's entry into the second World War, and the only one still performed regularly.
Inspired by a famous speech by U.S. Vice President Henry Wallace, Copland wanted to honor ordinary citizens who were contributing to the war effort and carrying the burdens of society. Copland recalled“I sort of remember how I got the idea of writing Fanfare for the Common Man—it was the common man, after all, who was doing all the dirty work in the war and the army. He deserved a fanfare.”

Maurizio Pollini has been performing and recording the piano works of Chopin for more than half a century. He was the winner of the 1960 International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw in 1960 and has recorded multiple albums of the Polish composer's work ever since.
