TAS Review: Mytek 192, Benchmark DAC2 , Lynx Hilo
Steve Stone reviewed these three DSD DACs in the current issue of TAS. I quickly read the review at a friend’s house this weekend, so if I misrepresent anything, please correct me. I’m a Benchmark DAC2 owner and was somewhat rooting for the home team, so I was a bit let down when Stone didn’t declare a winner. His conclusion: he likes all three and would be happy with any of them. Therefore budget and feature set should dictate the choice, not sonic performance.
Is this a cop-out or a realistic assessment of three well executed DACs using the latest USB, DAC and analog technology? He doesn’t avoid describing what he heard with the DACs; highly resolving, neutral tonal balance, exceptional dynamic range, etc. But he doesn’t spill much ink differentiating between the DACs on the basis of sound.
I think what may be going on is that because all three DACs are produced by pro audio companies, their design choices are more focused on delivering accuracy and neutrality rather than a particular audiophile sound. I have to admit it took me a while to get used to the Benchmark DAC2. I wanted it to deliver certain audiophile tricks and colorations, and I had to come to terms with the fact that the DAC2 is not designed to do that.
John Gatski at Everything Audio Network reviewed both the Mytek and Benchmark. On his forum he commented “Both converters are fantastic in their audio quality. Line out with matched levels into a preamp, the sound is very close.” He decided that feature set and price are the primary differentiators between the Mytek and Benchmark, not sound quality. So SS @ TAS wouldn’t be the first reviewer to reach that conclusion.

Russ,
Although these three DACs do have a strong pro audio pedigree, I am surprised to read that Steve finds them so close in sound as to be secondary to features. John Gatski, yes...I mean, the DAC2 and Mytek are both based on SABRE chips, yes, so it might be expected that they sound similar (a lot depends on the analog stage and power supply) ...but the Hilo is a different chipset (or is it FPGAs) all together. Same sound? Really? I have an FPGA-based DSD-capable DAC inhouse right now (Chord QuteHD) and no way does it sound the similar to my Myteks. A review is forthcoming, and although neither are slouches, there is no way these two flavors can be confused for one another. If one loves Fudge Chocolate, no way they say Fresh Strawberry Sorbet is similar.

Looking at photos of internals, Hilo seems to based on Cirrus Logic converters. CS5381 for ADC and CS4398 for DAC.

I had both the Benchmark and Mytek in house for a 30-day trial. I preferred the Benchmark (though I ultimately wound up purchasing neither, and got an Exasound e20 instead).
I particular, I found the analog volume control on the Mytek poorly implemented, and imparted a veil to the sound. The Mytek used with a digital volume control was better, but I still found the Benchmark more detailed and natural. The sound signature of the two units was fairly similar.
CAPSv3 Carbon running Jriver -> Audioquest Carbon USB -> Exasound E20 -> Acoustic Zen Silver Reference -> Simaudio W-5 -> Acoustic Zen Satori -> Dynaudio Contour S3.4

Looking forward to your review and how it compares to other DACS,
- #395 [steveha], 13-05-14 13:38Marvellous. Problem on driver ESS9018 has been cleared. I have fitted a 1ppm clock into Raspberry PI. Raspberry I2S was cofigured to slave mode. Now, Raspberry PI and DAC are listened to the common clock source. Jitter should be kept mininal when all devices are listerned to a single clock sourece.
