- #212 [ptsang], 07-05-06 11:03Hi Mat, I'm not sure if WE242C is a drop in replacement to 211, better double check first before purchase, besides, WE211D has a shorter life span than the other makes, check this as well, I've heard WE211D before in a WE gear, the sound is so good and that's the very reason I bought the Ongaku.
The pair of 5687 in the Ongaku is more critical than the 6072, still suggest you to buy a decent pair from Branden.
How the loose contact of the 211 tube holder affect your amp, does the light of the tube go out, what do u do to revive it, very interested to know. For me, I tighten up the 4 metal contacts in the tube holder so that when the tube is inserted, the 211 will hold straight up with no space to rock sideways, if the contacts are too tight, the 211 just can't go in. - #213 [MatthewC], 07-05-06 13:01Peter,
In my case, the 211 just won't light up at all, and all I need is to twist the 211 so that it locks again.
As to the 242C, it's actually different from the other WE211's and is supposed to be a direct substitute of the 211. But the price is soooo high, and the worst part is, if I am used to it, then what will happen when it finally gives up? Will life with RCA or United be hell :-) If there are at least 2 pairs, than that's a more sustainable proposition (money aside), but as is, it's a real dilemma..... -
- #214 [ptsang], 07-05-06 17:29Mat, what's the price of the WE242C, and how do you know there is still plenty of life in actual usage.Alex of Choice have plenty of WE stuff, have you checked on him.If you decide to go for it, ple tell me how they sound, you make me itch again. Now the GE211's have been singing for more than 50 hours without further faults, but the sound is awful even when compared with the RCA, the Ongaku should sound like heavens with WE tubes.
- #215 [MatthewC], 07-05-07 08:13Peter,
The WE242C is over 20K, with RCA's going for 6K, that's a lot of premium there.... worst part tubes are consumable, and I don't even know, even if the tube is NOS, how long it lasts compare to RCA and United....
This is so agonizing...... :-)
Will you consider buying the pair? :-) - #216 [F2aYeung], 07-05-08 18:25Mathew hing,
The one on left is M7IIK Signature.
The one on right is KSL-M7
Both are with phono section.
Notice the two holes in KSL-M7. Those are for the two ECC81 tubes - #217 [MatthewC], 07-05-08 20:44Mine look exactly like this one....
- #218 [JCR33], 07-05-08 20:57Is your M7 KSL?
- #219 [F2aYeung], 07-05-08 21:02I see.
Yours should be made during the transition period around 2000 to 2002.
This is the original M7-Tube.
Look at the position big caps. Similar to yours. - #220 [F2aYeung], 07-05-08 21:05This one the original M7 Phono which Kondo san teamed with Ongaku to 打江山 in Europe.
- #221 [F2aYeung], 07-05-08 21:07This one is the M7-Line for making money after the Kondo name got famous.
- #222 [MatthewC], 07-05-08 21:21JC,
Mine is the M7 IIK Line (i.e. M7 2000 Line). I think the KSL version came after this iteration. My version has the low pass filter output where you can connect the LPF output to a subwoofer, and mine has the optional Alps volume control as well..... I think your KSL M7 sounds more open and fast, but we can do an A/B later..... - #223 [MatthewC], 07-05-08 22:30F2aYeung hing,
I just noticed that there are only 2 tubes in the M7 Line... I must be missing something? Or is the 6x4 beneath the copper plate? - #224 [F2aYeung], 07-05-08 23:10You missed nothing.
Only 2 tubes. 1 X 6X4 + 1 X 5687.
This is the bottom view. - #225 [MatthewC], 07-05-08 23:36Ah ha. So that's why it's so much cheaper than the other versions? But how about the sound? It is close to the M7 Tube?
- #226 [F2aYeung], 07-05-09 21:39Matthew hing,
We had a shootout between 4 different Kondo preamps before. M7-Line didn't come last. Its major drawback is when playing 'bou pang'. Some saturation is noticed and the sound is not as 'solid' and 'stable' as its brothers.
Some more photos of Kondo preamps.
This one, the original M10 - #227 [F2aYeung], 07-05-09 21:41Again
- #228 [F2aYeung], 07-05-09 21:42This one, M100
- #229 [F2aYeung], 07-05-09 21:44Add another '0'. M1000
- #230 [MatthewC], 07-05-09 22:21F2aYeung hing,
So which Kondo pre came last? My past history would indicate what every I have will be the one, so M7 IIK? :-)
But from the photos, that's a very serious mix of Kondo equipments there. Though didn't expect to see Wadia 921/931 and transparent Opus MM :-)
An Oh, that Kegon-M. I really hoped that I would have saved enough money for it, but alas, it's no longer in production..... and did you hear the monobloc version of Kegon versus the original?

This loose loose contact thing is weird. It happened to me three times already. I was thinking it's my younger son (21 months) touching my amp, but maybe he not as curious/naughty as I thought :-) Maybe I should have more trust in my own offspring, ha ha.
And thinks for the insight into the tubes. I am not that familiar w/ 6X4, 12AY7 and 5687 myself. I have ordered a pair of U707 and a pair 6900 off ebay (gulp. fingers crossed). I also just picked up the square getter GE 6072 from Choice as well. Lots of things to try.....
But what do you think of the WE242C? I am tempted to lift the offer just in case it's awesome, but I have an evil plot as well. I can buy it and the rent it out to fellow Ongaku owners :-) and see who will pay to rent the tube for 2 hours or something..... grin. Maybe after a few rounds, my out of pocket cost for the WE will be more reasonable. But JC also heard the Amperex brass based 211 as well. I am so jealous!
