Early amps - mk1 - grey, five inputs.
Mid amps, - mk2 - black, sometimes with a silver top cover (1991 only), six inputs
Late amps - mk3 - all black, PSU changed to remove earth and double insulate
Serials with B,D,E,F are the easiest to support going forwards, before this there are now many obsolete things that are a pain.
A Mark 1 had 5 pin Din inputs, and was early/mid80's. Then came the Mark 2 with phono connections. They were update to Mark 3 in about 1991/1992 when they also changed to the black colour. That's it basically - someone can correct me if any of that is wrong, but it's close, if not correct.
