I also started this hobby in the late 80's (also while in high school). A friend (the devil) lured me into buying a starter system (Technics, NAD, Mirage) with the tutoring money I saved for an Yamaha ghettoblaster, and I kept myself poisoned till this day.
Through these years, not a lot of stuff can withstand the test of time and can keep up with the rest of the system's advancements. The LP12 is one, and the SBT, for so little money is simply amazing and has kept me happy for a few good years already. The R&D put in and the open software structure really stand out. I can just imagine a well known Swiss or American brand can just stuff the SBT into a milled aluminum box, tack on a few jewelry sockets and plugs, price it a few tens of k, and audiophiles would still rave about how good it is, possibly even more so than the credit it gets now. -
- #1292 [welborne], 14-08-27 21:16Since 1986, F5. A bit under 30 years...:)
- #1291 [beeos], 14-08-27 20:58welborne, did you start this hobby since 5 years old?

Regarding direct SBT-Nas connection method, it was written by Kuro on another thread "Daphile". I copy and paste here:
------------------------------------------
[#88] Daphile - Another Squeezebox Replacement
Welborne hing,
1) First, I'd use a crossover LAN cable. It is because the LAN port may not support MDI-X.
3) For example, set your NAS to 192.168.1.2, and your Touch to 192.168.1.3. Netmask in both cases should be 255.255.255.0. Obviously, your LAN has to be in this subnet (192.168.1.x/255.255.255.0) in order to connect to the NAS and Touch for setting the static IPs. Just by doing this, the Touch should be able to see the LMS inside your NAS, you can use the touch screen to play music, but there is no connection to the outside world (i.e.: your iPad).
4) No need to use a Class-B IP address. Just use a Class-C one.
5) 169.254.x.x are bogus IP addresses. This is the address typically assigned when the LAN card cannot find a DHCP server. Do not use it.
6) When you install the wifi finger, it should have a different IP address, like 192.168.2.x/255.255.255.0. I'm not sure if you can set the DNS server/gateway on your first subnet (192.168.1.x) to point to the IP address of the wifi finger. It may or may not work. I have not played with wifi finger with any of my NAS. - #1289 [welborne], 14-08-27 17:14Having been in this hobby for nearly 30 years (gee..time flies...where am I going..I am running in circles...help!) I have to keep reminding myself time after time , that, the money spent on R&D developing such mass device as Touch, may be 100000 times the money a small so-called audiophile company invest in a so called audiophile box. The fact that Touch is so cheap is partly to do with economies of scale in production.
Well not trying to say a Volksvagon Beetle will beat a Porsche 911. But when it comes to such niche hobby as audio where "good sound" is more more judgemental than factual, there are many roads to Rome.
最後修改時間: 2014-08-27 17:23:36 - #1288 [mahi], 14-08-27 16:54Many people don't feel like spending many extra k on a 2k plastic touch. They would rather like spend the many k all at once to buy a single box solution. I cant fault their rationale.
Though I enjoy my touch system a lot, the total bill up to day really scares me every time I think of it :p - #1287 [accudude], 14-08-27 16:14Hi, Guys!
I would like to share my little adventure with my SBT, too. Looking at the set-up now, it really seems crazy to have so much stuff attached to it, but I continue to be amazed by the quality of this little bugger every time a new improvement is made.
TP-Link 890EA wireless Ethernet adapter (I can’t run hard wire where the SBT is located) > Elecom CAT7 cable > Acoustic Revive RLI-1 LAN isolator > SBT > Supra USB cable > iFi iUSB Power > iFi Gemini > iFi iPurifier > iFi iLink > Acrolink 6n-5050II > Esoteric K-03
The SBT is powered by a linear supply built by Bush (the electronic supply shop in Central, not G.W.!) which is powered by a DIY Krypton PC-HR1000M cable with Furutech FI-50 plugs (not intentional. I just happen to have one idle for use). The SBT is sitting on a little brass platform with spikes and is further damped by a little ground box I made)
Totally ridiculous, but it does sound pretty good and in no way could I suspect the sound of a $2k plastic box from a PC peripheral maker. Playing the same 16/44 stuff, the Esoteric as a CD player still sounds a little better (mainly more alive and better extended), but the difference is not so big that I cannot enjoy the music. High res brings the performance significantly up, with the well recorded stuff sounding rather magnificent.
Perhaps one can say that I could have use what I have invested into and around the SBT into something significantly better in the beginning, but the good thing with what I have done is that I can go one step at a time and keep the fun and satisfaction coming every step of the way. Perhaps the next step would be to improve upon that little stretch of Supra (although I have yet to become a true believer of trick USB cables and don’t want to spend too much on it)
Cheers. - #1286 [22], 14-08-27 16:11welborne & albert兄,
how do you made the NAS direct connet to SBT without router ?
thx. - #1285 [welborne], 14-08-27 13:45Ptcm兄:
No worries, please continue to chime in and share with us your journey. In hifi I have long since given up to believe the A beat B thing. Different , Yes. Better? doubtfully.
You ear and your system may prefer the Mac/A+ set up over the other. It is absolutely normal phenonmenon. But it is your own finding and preference only.
I think there is no written rule as to the nature of posts here. But I would think it would help the many c hing here to concentrate on tips regarding fine tuning SBT, if we could keep posts like "xx win SBT by a largest margin..etc"for a new thread with title like "what CAS solution you tried"
Recently I met a few guys who are all extremely well versed in computer audio. Beeos is one of them, and a few others. They all have absolutely gorgeous system, they all have sensitive ears, and they have absolutely indepth knowledge head and above many others in setting up CAS, and went great length in optimising them, and they have also tried many different solutions (either they had them or their friemds had them), the sort of "been there, done that" journey. Yet they all have very different preference and take on very different paths in reaching their own audio nirvana. Your ranking is different again from theirs but there is nothing discrediting your finding. But it is only your findings. - #1284 [albertmoto], 14-08-27 13:04I have experience in listening to Welborne's SBT source twice. I can tell SBT cannot sound that good as its alone only. Not plug and play!!!!
You also need a lot of extra equipment to couple with the SBT to make it really high-end as he did.
You may need...
1) an extra Linear Power Supply for SBT.
2) a good USB cable, a USB to spdif converter + a USB power conditioner (Welborne is using iFi products)
3) a good DAC. Welborne is using a DAC within Redbook technology. That what I surprising that his 16/44.1 CAS playback can sound that good, lively and analog. No "electronics" feel at all but is really high analytical!!
4) NAS direct connect to SBT, if u connect the NAS via the router, it will downgrade a lot.
5) Also... may be a 3rd party OS / firmware upgrade too? (Please check this thread)
Welborne C Hing took a lot of effort and trials to build his current SBT system. I have a lot of MacBook CAS and also some expensive CAS brands' listening experience. I think I can say his "SBT set of system" is one of the best CAS system I ever heard.
I think this thread is just a share of experience for how to make a SBT sounds great. Everyone may has his own taste or favour, that's not a big deal!!
最後修改時間: 2014-08-27 13:05:23 - #1283 [ptcm], 14-08-27 12:11This thread can be anything related to SBT lah.
It's entertaining to see people making up thread rules and nonsensical reasons to deter SBT users' opinion that's different from their own.
It's a free world, and whether to believe or not is your choice. No one put a gun on your head to move away from SBT.
That said, as much as I love SBT as a standalone product(I really do), I wouldn't blindly stick it just because some users never had a chance to explore different avenues to achieve a more optimal sonic experience by other products.ie, Mackbook with A+ or pure music, or network player, etc.
最後修改時間: 2014-08-27 12:33:40 - #1282 [mahi], 14-08-27 11:57Ptcm,
I think you might have been misled by some of our enthusiastic posts into thinking SBT is the best platform for CAS, and yet you found a simple and better solution yourself. All I can say is it's unfortunate, yet your handwork (or not too much work) borne fruitful results for yourself! You enjoy your CAS and that's good thing.
This thread is not really about proclaiming SBT's superiority over others, in fact many have come and gone, and moved on to other devices along the years. My understanding of this place is to share tips on how to make the best out of SBT and network streaming in general. - #1281 [welborne], 14-08-26 21:57#1279: I can't discredit your finding as I am not eligible to do so. I have never had Mac nor W8 and I was not in your room. Yet I am not so sure if Mac is "better" than PC/SBT. But I am absolutely positively sure that you "like it better". That matter more to us.
With all due respect. - #1280 [welborne], 14-08-26 21:35Hello Ptcm: you have overlooked one most important equipment in the chain. We both have it : our ear drums.
And also our perception of what contributes to better. Reproduced music is an target-miss-hit form of compromises and different people have quite different "self definition" of what mean better to oneself.
Not trying to say Mac Aren't Better than PC or that Touch is better than anything to you. You may as well be very faithful to your finding and I believe every words you said are truthful to what you heard. I believe it. But its your own judgement and other people who sit in your same room at the same spot under the same moment in time may feel completely different even you all are hearing indeed the same sound waves.
Its just that. Your points are very valid, for the matter of forming part of the statistics.
Thats exactly how I opened my previous post: diifferent strokes for different blokes!

The fact of the matter is when fixed parameters gears are compared by replacing source independently one by one, the outcome is very clear and simple.
It's a simple trial and error concept. No self-proclaimed CAS expert experience is needed. It's absurd to proclaim special knowledge that no one understand because it just doesn't exist.
Other things being constant, SBT underperforms MacBook is a factual information regardless of whether Amarra or pure music or Audiovirna Plus is being used.

BTW, I am yet to figure out how to direct SBT-NAS and still with iPeng ~~~~~ - #1277 [beeos], 14-08-26 12:41Something to share, hope this is not offensive...
There're lot of such comparison on and off. IMO, such comparison gives some hints to people who wanna enter the CAS (or FAS) world. But for those who has bought some gears dedicated for CAS/FAS, it is not so meaningful. Because:
1. Lot of factors, the player software / OS is not the only variables. We have lot lot more parameters.
2. It's like apple to orange.
3. For those who has already bought apple, think about how to make this apple a better apple is better than buying orange and try. - #1276 [welborne], 14-08-26 12:38And out of this mess (haha), Touch is the cheapest and perhaps most user friendly. Its biggest flaw is : too bloody cheap and its embarassing to tell people you spent a $1000 usb cable to use on a $2000 toy from a company (Logitech) that is more famous for Mouse than audiophile-pride-inducing bomb-proof machine.LOL.
Luckily, it does not embarass me at all.by iPhone / iPad App
