- #382 [welborne], 15-10-05 14:15Another bigger LC horn for 2" driver
- #383 [welborne], 15-10-06 17:45Side track a bit (well still not completely). More about the Klipsch K55v (aka Atlas PD-5VH)
My audio designer friend Dirk from Germany has been doing a mini CD driver shootout lately. The horn is a very nice looking wooden horn inspired by Altec multicell 1505. About 7 drivers were installed on the horn and tested at 1m -
- #384 [welborne], 15-10-06 17:47The horn.
All of the drivers were mounted on the same horn for measurement.
Amongst the candidates are the Atlas PD-5HV alnico (the cheapest in the bunch) and huge TAD 2002 - #385 [welborne], 15-10-06 17:48Atlas
- #386 [welborne], 15-10-06 17:48Atlas
- #387 [welborne], 15-10-06 17:51This is the driver with the lowest power handling 40w and lowest Fs (110hz). I mentioned above that the Atlas-Klipsch K55v is Paul Klipsch effort to clone the WE555 which he regarded as a masterpiece. Only that the K55/Atlas has a phenolic diaphram and alnico magnet (insteadvof fieldcoil)
- #388 [welborne], 15-10-06 17:52Here is the huge TAD 2002
- #389 [welborne], 15-10-06 17:53Plots of TAD 2002 fitted to 1505. For comparison
- #390 [welborne], 15-10-06 17:56All in all, Dirk is overly impressed by the sound as well as the measurement of the Klipsch/Atlas. He also listened to WE555 fieldcoil replica before
- #391 [welborne], 15-10-06 18:03Remember? I posted this pic before. It was taken from the Klipsch Museum at Hope Akansas. Paul Klipsch was studying the WE555 from Western Electric and asked Atlas to model it. The earliest Klipschorn were fitted with WE CD drivers
- #392 [welborne], 15-10-06 18:05Also some German horn guys have had good result from pairing Atlas drivers with big WE snail horns
- #393 [welborne], 15-10-06 18:23Something I was told about the K55v/Atlas.
They are small because the big one basically are big for heat dissipation. CD drivers can get very hot at operation so the larger metal body helps cooling especially when you want them to have very high power handling (over 100w). The lowly Atlas could only take 40w, implying its voicecoil has thinner wire (unlike most PRO stuff which are brute and can take quite a beating), hence lighter assembly. It may not be the ultimate driver to handle high decibel in PA system, for home use its an excellent choice. Thanks to its doped vintage phenolic diaphram and alnico magnet, it goes lower (sacrificing for reaching higher) and has a distinctive seductive vintage tone that you cant find in titanium/aluminium diaphram drivers. Definitely need to be complenented by a HF tweeter though. - #394 [vincentaudio], 15-10-06 19:19
Alnico k55v

- #400 [welborne], 15-10-06 20:20These two are different K55V phase plugs

有關LC的曲線我未有詳細研究,因為怕睇數字,但看過有關它的文章,它的curve是用電腦similate音波由CD出來一直到離開horn 咀時的behaviour,用mathematics model出來(well, what is not...?)。LC先生解釋horn一向的achilles heel是它的音染,而這種音染其中一個來源是音波在horn內的internal reflection 及因而引起的interference。LC的曲缐就是要minimize 這些。
希望冇記錯
