- #7949 [rover901], 10-10-18 21:15Smittie hing, if u want absolute cool, forget tubes.
Try something new, surprise us in the next gathering :)
Gneonhk, the string of harbeth is unbeatable, but vocal lose to tannoy, in my system. Thesoundstage of harbeth is still relax and large, while Tannoy has pin point image. These are my comment at this moment. - #7948 [m40], 10-10-18 21:03No idea which model, it is single box solidstate, guess not very expensive.

- #7947 [agentsmittie], 10-10-18 21:01but pre amp is little light bulbs, power is big bulbs wor :)
- #7946 [gneonhk], 10-10-18 20:57m40 hing,
which model of mcintosh u will recommend?
^^ - #7945 [gneonhk], 10-10-18 20:55smittie hing,
due to poor power efficiency of all kind of tube, no matter pre or power (power amp even hotter of cause), i don't think that nagra pll will "feel" cooler if yr wife can't tolorance the heat generated by v70.
in fact, i think goldmund 390 is quite impressive to drive yr LV from last gathering obversation. just don't know if it can suit yr taste. - #7944 [gneonhk], 10-10-18 20:50just a wild guess (i've not audit DC8 before:P). i think C7 will has advantage in string, some vocal and classical playback. while tannoy will certainly be a more "modern design" speaker, so that more exciting feel for jazz, and more "pin point" in sound stage. and may be, more sweet in vocal ^_^
- #7943 [agentsmittie], 10-10-18 20:46LOL not itchy to upgrade, but wife is really bugging me on this.
I did think of Firstwatt and the Octave pre. But that would be just as hot if not hotter than the integrated that they replace.
Wouldn't the Nagra PLL run cooler? May be with a low power transistor power amp?
I also heard that the little FM Acoustics 155 pre is amazing. But a little too pricy for me. - #7942 [rover901], 10-10-18 20:36Smittie, no tube pre is running cool, changing to tube pre + ss power will still be complain by ur wife, so I assume u are just itchy to upgrade …:)
Stereosound sound has a very sensible suggestion:
Octave HP300 + Firstwatt M2 power amp, should be very good:)
Cchome, I need some more time to runin the speaker, at this moment all i can tell u is that the way it handles music in my system is very very outstanding, even better than C7 in certain music. Surprises me so much that I wonder I might just give up the harbeth.......
The blog is still developing, I appreciate guys who share their view in my blog in the past 12 months, and I still need you guys' input to make it even better. Chairman, Interested to write something in my blog?

- #7940 [cchome_co], 10-10-18 14:14rover hing, yr blog became OK ... more visitors see wow... open a company la...I support U
- #7939 [agentsmittie], 10-10-18 13:16I am kind of thinking of going the other extreme, i.e. the 47 Lab Gaincard or its clones like the Audiosector Patek.
Mahi do you have any insight on the Gain clones?
Alternatively, the lustiest tube pre for me is the Nagra. But a bit over budget given the requirement for a power amp as well. - #7938 [KongKong], 10-10-18 12:38Thank you sir.
for suggestions of tube pre-amps, i really have no idea...... other c hings should have plenty of suggestions. - #7937 [agentsmittie], 10-10-18 12:03Good suggestions on tube pre.
Any suggestions? - #7936 [cchome_co], 10-10-18 09:54rover hing,
waiting for yr 1st round report......頸都長咗! - #7935 [KongKong], 10-10-18 09:30how about changing to tube preamp + solid state power amp?
最後修改時間: 2010-10-18 09:30:49 - #7934 [agentsmittie], 10-10-18 08:46I don't know if I even want to give up my valve amp yet as I have not even finished enjoying it.
I will definitely keep my Living Voice.
Very unlikely to go back to Naim. I was up to Naim's mid "reference" level, but sold it to someone at a very very good (for the buyer) price. I will have to pay a lot more just to reach my previous level.
But then again may be with efficient speakers like the LV I do not need that much amplification? I am not sure.
I may just get a simple silicon integrated like the Lavardin and settle in. But the Lavardin seems not available locally though. Any idea? - #7933 [rover901], 10-10-18 00:31Smittie, will u change ur speaker too? Or keep the LV and go back to naim?

tube pre is okay if it employs a few small tubes (like herron for example). i don't think your wife will notice the temperature rising in your room (esp. the tubes are hidden from sight).
but the bigger problem is what to match with your tube pre? there's not many brands that employ tube/ss combination. if you mix/match brands then it can be problematic as most tube pre has quite high output impedance, where a lot of ss amp have low input impedance.
class a amps including first watt are warm as well. so i guess your choice is limited to low power ss amp (50w or less). anything more will likely has a big transformer inside and so you will continue to feel the 'heat' from your wife :D
p.s. i don't know anything about gainclones, they are not cheap nor marketable so i'd rather get 47 lab used.
